Spencer Pratt from "The Hills" is a little upset after "The Today Show" canceled an interview between him, his wife Heidi Montag and Al Roker on Nov. 16. He is so upset in fact that he let the world know via his Twitter.
First, he made fun of Roker's weight, and weight loos, by saying:
"WEATHERMAN I thought you were out of town today getting your stomach stapled again?"
Next, he moved on to Roker's appearance in general and his age:
"You look very sick? Do you always look like your about to die? How old are you 97? You should retire asap- No one would even know?"
Then, he mocked the relationship that he has with his children by saying:
"I heard you snitched on your own kids at school! I bet your kids HATE you!! I would if my own dad came to my school and snitched me about"
(By the way, "Rad and Bad Reality" could not find a source who talked about the "snitching" Pratt complains about, so we are not sure what this one was about)
Lastly, Pratt talks about Roker's previous marriages, saying:
"Is it true you have been married six times? I'm sure all your wives left you when they realized you were abusive to women! Sicko!"
This drama between Pratt and Roker may stem from a June 15 encounter where Roker was the one saying harsh things about Pratt and Montag. You can see the awkward interview below.
"Rad and Bad Reality" is not at all surprised by the outlandish behavior of Pratt, considering Pratt believes there is no such thing as bad press. But, we are a little saddened that Pratt would act that way, especially considering he made fun of someone's appearance and parenting skills. Sure, "Rad and Bad Reality" makes fun of people sometimes as well, but saying someone is a bad parent crosses a line of downright disrespect and not just harmless fun.
News value-Conflict: Although disrespectful, "Rad and Bad Reality" still believes this is very important in the world of reality TV. As Pratt said, even when the stars are not really in the greatest light, it's still publicity and good when it comes to how famous a person is. Pratt is now getting attention, which he really does seem to crave (just read his Twitter feed and you'll see it for yourself), so the outrage did spark controversy and give him exactly what he most likely wanted. The more attention he gets from the press and people worldwide, the more viewers "The Hills" may also get just so people can see how he acts on that show as well.
This blog post topic is making news elsewhere (in fact, almost everywhere) and reflects the traditional news value of conflict. The conflict between Roker and Pratt seems to have been long-lasting, so this new conflict is certainly newsworthy in the entertainment world and in the reality TV world. It is important to post blog posts about things other than what happened on a reality TV show if it includes a reality TV star and especially if it is so newsworthy and is a conflict. They always say in the news world, "if it bleeds, it leads." That's true in the reality TV world as well, as if Pratt did something kind, it probably would not make news (or at least not make as much news as when he does something outrageous and rude).

Why are these people considered "celebrities"?
ReplyDeleteGregory,
ReplyDeleteThat is a really good question and one with honestly no answer. I think we, meaning Americans, thrive on reality television for the simple fact that it is "real," well, at least supposed to be real. Many people may see themselves in certain reality stars, or just enjoy watching the shows because they feel as if they are watching someone's real life unfold before them.
As for Spencer and Heidi, let's face it, conflict is a news value that interests many people worldwide. Why do people seem to be so thrilled by the Tiger Woods saga? Because the conflict with his wife and the other women and reasons why he may have crashed his car is important to many people.
I think that the conflict that Spencer and Heidi Pratt bring to television is really what draws people in. It may very well be the factor of wondering what they may do next that keeps people still thinking and talking about the both of them.

To expand on your idea Kaitlyn. I think much of the interest in reality TV lies in the fact that these people live their "lives" in a way that a normal American never could or would.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Cameron. I'm sure many people watch it to see what life is like for people unlike themselves. It is a way to escape and see insight into the lives of others.
